PETALING JAYA: One does not have to be from a big company to chip in to help earthquake victims in Sumatra, said Hai-O Enterprise Bhd chairman Tan Sri Osman S. Cassim.

Hai-O, which donated RM100,000 to the “CIMB-The Star Padang Relief Fund,” is urging Malaysians to do their part to help the victims as they come to terms with the devastating tragedy.

“Malaysians should contribute in whatever way possible. Even a small amount will go a long way,” he said during the cheque presentation ceremony at Menara Star here yesterday.

Also present was Hai-O Enterprise Bhd Group managing director Tan Kai Hee and Hai-O Foundation chairman Dr Raja Lope Raja Shahrome.

They presented the cheque to Star Publications (M) Bhd executive director Ng Beng Lye and The Star’s group chief editor Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.

Dr Raja Lope said one could help either directly or indirectly be it through donations, medical or food aid.

Donations have been pouring in to the fund which was launched last Friday.

The CIMB Group, had donated RM100,000 to kick-start the fund, which was set up in collaboration with Star Publications (M) Bhd.

The CIMB Foundation will match donations from the public ringgit for ringgit up to RM1mil.

As of yesterday, the fund stood at RM767,273.76, of which RM333,636.88 came from corporate pledges and bank account balance, a figure which was matched ringgit for ringgit by CIMB Foundation.

Collection boxes have been placed at CIMB Group’s 1,150 branches in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

A collection box is also available at Menara Star in Phileo Damansara II.

Customers and the public can also donate via cheque or online banking to two collection accounts, conventional and Islamic.

The payee name is CIMB-The Star Padang Relief Fund and the account numbers are: 1408 1206 6620 56 (CIMB Bank) or 1404 0000 4891 03 (CIMB Islamic).
