KLANG: Over 800 distributors of Sahajidah Hai-O Marketing (SHOM) had to cancel their leisure trip to Bangkok following the recent explosion at the Erawan Shrine there.

Its general manager, Tham Yoke Lon, said the company decided to call off the holiday in Bangkok because the safety of its distributors was important.

He said the company sent their distributors for two trips annually as an incentive for their efforts throughout the year.

“We took up to five months to plan this leisure trip to Bangkok and it was supposed to be for four days and three nights starting Aug 21. The company spent RM2mil for this, and since we chose to cancel it at the last minute, we were not able to get any refund,” he said at Wawasan Hai-O here.

He added that he would rather spend another RM2mil to send his distributors to another location for their holiday instead of making them risk their lives by going to Bangkok now.

“Maybe if the perpetrators were caught we could have gone ahead with the plan, but that has not happened.

“Considering the situation, our distributors would probably have been restless and apprehensive throughout the trip, which defeats the purpose of the holiday,” he said, adding that losing money was nothing compared to risking the lives of staff and the relationships established over the last 23 years.

Tham added that he was in the midst of making arrangements for a replacement trip.

Distributor Safiah Yosop, who represented all the Muslim distributors, said she was grateful to Hai-O for cancelling the trip.

“We were all on edge about the trip since the bomb blast happened and in my WhatsApp group with other distributors, we constantly spoke about how fearful we were.

“By God’s grace, however, the trip was cancelled and we are all genuinely relieved,” said Safiah, who has been with the company for 14 years.
